(Continued from The GUN! #1)
"CASINO OF EVIL!"
As I said in the previous post, this started out as a JOKE. It was never meant to go past the initial story.
But you know how things are. Some things take on a life of their own. In this case, my brother and I found "THE ORIGIN OF THE GUN!" out-and-out hilarious. We couldn't stop laughing. Weeks later, we were STILL laughing. That's when I began to think that maybe I was onto something.
Well, sure enough, before long, I found myself doing a 2nd episode. As with many "sequels", it wasn't that good. For a long time, I considered this the worst of all the GUN! stories I'd written. Still, it had something. The sequence where the hero shoots up the illegal gambling casino was inspired by a similar scene in DETECTIVE COMICS #38 (Apr'40). No kidding! And, while it may be hard to tell from the art, the villains, at least in my mind, were inspired by Robert Vaughn & David McCallum. NO, REALLY. Of course, that would be more obvious when I got around to redoing the story years later.
Let me repeat that these were not just done as "mini-comics", but intended as "rough drafts". That goes for both the story AND art. Over the years, I've had some people look at these and comment, "Oh, your art got much better since then." They failed to realize, my art was much better THEN. These were deliberately done this way, to get through the art as fast as possible, in order to get the story down.
"CASINO OF EVIL!" Enjoy!
