"THE MOB'S REVENGE!"
In many ways, this is where The GUN!, as a series, began to take off.
At this point, I'd only written 2 episodes. Apart from the brief "origin" (which had only taken up a single page), and the fact that he was an ex-cop, we knew nothing about the hero. We didn't know his real name, had never seen his face, had never met anyone else he knew.... nothing. And so far, ALL of the bad guys had gotten killed! Clearly, some development of some kind was called for.
And so, I decided I needed to introduce a recurring villain-- one who wouldn't get killed off by the last page. The simplest option was to make him the successor of "Big Boss" from #1. Absurdly, "The New Big Boss" wasn't given a real name when he was introduced, either. But that would come, eventually. While "Big Boss" would eventually come to be known as "Big Eddy Robinski", the guy who took over his job would, eventually, be known as "Harry Kaminski", while his right-hand man (seen on pages 4 & 5) would come to be known as "Big Jim MacDonald". (Why a Polish-run Mob had their HQ in Camden's Little Italy is anyone's guess.)
The story here sprang from a suggestion by my brother. He said, "How about if The GUN! got ambushed in a dead-end alley?" That was it. One sentence. One week and 16 pages of hard work later, I had my 3rd GUN! episode finished. And while I felt a bit embarrassed about the 2nd one, this one, I felt very good about. It got even better in the rewrite, but the basics were all here.
"THE MOB'S REVENGE!" Enjoy!
